âTwo rosés, please,â Gia told the bartender at her apartmentâs lobby bar.
âI canât,â Taylor told her. âIâll sit with you, though.â The glass and a half of rosé at the party felt like it was still sitting in her throat after Royceâs surprising exit.
âNo speech then,â Jack had said to the crowd, but the comment didnât earn many smiles. Tension was thick in the air. The music started up again and, little by little, conversations restarted. Bran had been silent, his face unreadable. Giaâs wasnât as much of a mystery.
Theyâd stayed only fifteen minutes or so more before Gia hooked Taylorâs arm and suggested they leave, too. Fine by Taylor. Sheâd had enough of the strange evening.
Now, wineglasses in front of them, Gia pushed Taylorâs closer. âJust one.â
She couldnât turn down her friend. They needed to talk anyway and what Taylor had to say was best discussed over even the most meager amount of alcohol.
âNo gray hairs, you swear?â
Taylor held up a palm. âHand to God.â
âJay.â Gia shook her head. âWhen is he going to back off and get a life?â
âWhen are you?â Taylor teased, raising an eyebrow.
âBitch!â Gia laughed the word, giving Taylor a playful shove in the arm before laying her head on Taylorâs shoulder. âYouâd think heâd have found some new woman to tease.â
âYouâll always be teased by Jayson Cooper,â Taylor said, confident she was right. âHas he even been on a date since you two split?â
âGod. I hope so. I hope both of us havenât been celibate for the last year-plus.â
âYouâd have my sympathy if I hadnât gone two years before sleeping with someone.â Taylor sipped her wine, not realizing until her friendâs mouth dropped open that sheâd just confessed the end to her own celibacy.
âWho? Who did you sleep with recently?â Gia had been Taylorâs own personal cheerleader these last few years. Taylor had confessed she didnât feel anything sexually after Seth left. Her fatherâs diagnosis had only added to her brokenness. Gia had comforted her, saying, âWhen youâre ready, youâll know. No rush.â
Taylor took a gulp of her wine, though fortifying herself with the drink meant sticking around longer than she intended. âBefore I tell you, you have to promise not to be mad.â
âOh shit. You slept with Brannon?â
âNo. I slept with Royce.â
Giaâs dark eyes rounded. She hadnât been expecting that. âRoyce as in my oldest, glorified accountant brother?â
âThatâs the one. I showed up at his house last night wearing that La Perla slip Iâve had for way too long.â
Gia gaped at her. âWhy?â
Valid question.
âMy dad.â
Her friendâs eyebrows rose.
âHe cautioned me against dating Royce over the years. Said he was too old for me. I guess after the kiss at the gala, and the way Royce has been looking at me...â
âHeâs been looking at you? Why didnât you tell me any of this!â Giaâs tone was accusatory, and deservedly so. Taylor normally told her friend everything.
âI wasnât sure. Heâs run a little hot and cold. Until last night. Then it was full-blast hot.
